If many women are taught to clutch their keys and walk the other way if they encounter such a group [of men of color] on the way home at night, ConBody counts on the fact that in the safety of a boutique studio, these same women will pay to exercise with the people they’ve been socialized to fear.

Since 2011, Butches and Babies (not to be confused with baby butches) has been compiling photos.
It’s not at all easy to march through the world shattering gender norms at every turn. So when a butch holds a small child, relatively unaffected by gender (in a cognitive/behavioral sense), it is a simultaneous exchange of healing and freedom. Maybe I think about this too much, but that’s what I see. Every single time. I see hope and a new world.

How to Talk to Your Kids About Sex.
Use pop culture as a springboard for talking about your values... Is there any better song for talking about toxic masculinity than “Grenade” by Bruno Mars? My son and I had an interesting talk about the song “Tell Me You Love Me” by Demi Lovato: Why are girls taught “you ain’t somebody ‘till you got somebody” and is that really true?

AFROPUNK JOBURG
What better place than South Africa to celebrate and affirm resistance. As 2018 slid into 2019 and the rain came down on the crowds, AFROPUNK aficionados embodied the mantra #ThePeopleResist with a musical lineup of melanin and Black magic. "When it comes to groove (partying, cutting a rug, etc) South Africans have a saying that goes 'ndiyoyika ukuthi izobamnandi' which means 'I’m scared that it might be a good time.'"

Put some cheese on it
I’ll Fight Anyone Who Says You Shouldn’t Put Cheese on Your Ramyun: "It was like a mangled version of Korean mac and cheese, spicy and tangy... A bowl of ramen at Ramen Shop in Oakland will cost you nearly twenty American dollars. You are paying for the ambiance, and for what their website calls “artistic, organic, and sustainable ramen.” But maybe you don’t want that kind of ramen."
Roy Choi’s instant ramen recipe introduced the notion to (and horrified some of) the wider American public. Cheese-flavored ramen packets.
Korean recipes incorporating cheese include Buldak (fire chicken) with cheese | Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) with cheese | Ram’& Cheese | Kimchi Mac & Cheese | Budaejjigae (Army base stew) historically includes a slice of American cheese, given its origins.

"In order to provide food for the workers, a network of growers, and local Chinese importers established a trans-Pacific supply chain. Food included rice, preserved meats; dried fish, shrimp, and other shellfish; dried legumes; dried noodles, preserved vegetables, dried seaweeds, and teas... As the work moved through Nevada, the Central Pacific had two train cars labeled “China Store,” from which goods could be purchased... Food was so important that the Chinese cooks were paid more than unskilled workers." (Key Questions)

wrote in her notebooks “[The Yiddish folk saying] ‘Tsu zingen un tsu zogn’ [To sing and to say]…derives from the time when the Jewish ‘Spielmänner’ (the Jewish minstrels of the Middle Ages) would recite their bardic tales set to a chant. In the Yiddish vernacular, it has come to mean a person who has a lot to complain about.”
In 1947, she began documenting traditional Yiddish singers primarily in New York City and Montreal. Switching to magnetic tape in the 1950s (which, in addition to improving audio fidelity, did away with the time restrictions of recording to disc), Rubin eventually amassed a collection of over 2,500 Yiddish folk songs. The collection is now available through the Ruth Rubin Legacy online exhibition of the Max and Frieda Weinstein Archive of Sound Recordings at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.

This 6 min video from China Dialogue Ocean shows how global demand for fishmeal (mainly used to feed farmed fish) affects locals in the Gambia. According to the Gambian ministry of fisheries, the establishment of Chinese fishmeal factories on the coast is part of the difficult calculus for national development. But women looking to feed their families, see it quite differently: "exporting fishmeal doesn't benefit us, it makes us suffer... we Gambians should have access to the fish before the factory."
